Michigan has passed the PT Compact into law and is not issuing privileges. That gap is wider than it sounds: a state can sit on a compact map for years while its board finishes the data-sharing work participation requires. A full Michigan license is the only route today.

Compact status changes with legislative sessions and Commission votes. Confirm current membership with the PT Compact Commission before relying on it — this page reflects our last verification, not a live feed.

A degree from a CAPTE-accredited physical therapy or physical therapist assistant program

A passing score on the NPTE for your discipline

A criminal background check, fingerprint-based in most jurisdictions

Where Michigan Applications Go Wrong

Planning around a start date. Michigan has enacted but not implemented, and no public date binds the board.

Reading a compact map as availability. Most published maps show enacted states, which is why so much advice about Michigan is wrong.

Letting the home-state license lapse. Everything downstream depends on it, including any privilege already purchased.

Assuming a PTA follows the same route as a PT. The compact covers both, but the eligibility check and the privilege are separate.
